http://www3.fitnyc.edu/artmarket/pieceofmind/pr.html What happens when a fresh faced group of twelve F.I.T. graduate student curators spend a year combing the New York art base from galleries to studios? Not only do they come up with ten artists, two of whom are GalleryBeat artists that work with us on production, but their professor is John Post Lee of Bravin Lee Projects. Seredipity, cohesion, and conceptual width. What I like about this particular set of artists and curators is happy enthusiasm, even from veteran artists who catch the bubbly vibe of the F.I.T. tribe right down to a guy as cranky as me, and their teacher, John Lee.

Did art star Judy Rifka have it in for Billy The ArtStar? (BTA) There is conjecture on the subject when during yesterdays press interview with BTA. As he was talking about his new work all attention was suddenly diverted as Rifka began taking the room apart. Can Judy play nice with others? Dr. Lisa Levy gives analysis for GalleryBeat at the scene, DUAL.

If Facebook is Any Indication…

DUAL – curated by Savannah Spirit. Artists include BTA, Chambliss Giobi, Max Langhurst, Christopher Lee, Tara Meisenheimer, John D. Monteith, Judy Rifka, Sadie Weis, Agnis Zotis, Frantic F Emme (performance)

In the battle of the art fairs this weekend I wouldn’t even dare to put odds on anything other than to say the Gershwin Hotel has a head start on eccentric. It is a genuine oddity and a throwback to another decade from the last century. In the location (7 E 27th St. NYC) just look for the red building with huge white horn shaped things protruding from the facade. In that is it’s strength. Savannah Spirit has some very strong artists in her suites and it’s looking very good as a hometown team. The Duel rooms were mobbed in one, and quiet in the other for the press preview but I’m sure that is changed by now. As for Pool, it is all over the map. It’s actually in some cases, astoundingly a free-for-all for any artist or rep that can come up with the $1600 to get a room. It’s the anti Armory Show. There are some true believers and it just pulls on your heart. You may not like some of these unrepresented artists work at Pool, but there are some like Judy Rifka, Chris Lee, and John D. Monteith to name three that know what they’re doing, and it looks mighty good against the dozens of other artist suites at Pool.

Curated by Eric Doeringer, this artist manque group show (look it up) delivers a number of blows against the Empire. Exhibited in the less spacious gallery it inhabited in Chelsea, even the non-profit Elizabeth Foundation in it’s present space serves as a gritty reminder that all is not well in the art world masked in image maintenance. They could use some shades, that would help. The show itself is hilarious and informative while exhibiting an excellent skill set of art that dares to critique artist and the establishment the artist so dearly wants to be part of, maybe.

This clip from Talkshow #2, taped in front of a clamoring live audience at Brooklyn’s Pierogi gallery, features artist and Facebook wizard Oliver Wasow. Oliver was the owner of one of the seminal artist-run galleries in New York City, Cash Newhouse. The East Village and downtown NYC churned out many of the great American artists in that short but hot time from the mid/late 70s and into the 80s, including the likes of Cindy Sherman, Jim Jarmusch, and Patti Smith. Hosted, as always, by GalleryBeat’s own Paul H-O and Dr. Lisa Levy, with her Rx pad at the ready. Artist Jim Torok is on exhibition, Rev Jen, Fuzzanova, Hula hoop artist Jacqui Becker and gallerist visionary HUDSON of Feature Inc. were also on the bill. GB Producer – Paul H-O, Samantha Schlaifer, Cameras – Gaia Baldini, Aimee Graham, Editor – Gaia Baldini.

Thus it’s un-cool and pissing irony but fun and we just get down on the love for our guests and that is enough ands, and we are doing it because it’s our amazing and not-amazing because we’re like terrible capitalists. But in a really good venue, Pierogi 2000!

Therein lay the rub. Ecoological art hasn’t quite made it over the hump. At least as a form of documentation that will rivet me to what I’m seeing. It’s a bit of a high school science fair with Birkenstocks. Lord knows I/we tried but it was just challenging. Our experiences with artist participants was mostly brittle but when we were left to our own devices then we had fun. It was like talking about a Prius, it’s odd, a bit ducky, gets great gas mileage, the owners feel righteous, and we really want a Porche.

Paul and Dr. Lisa visit Pierogi 2000 to see the Jane Fine show and try to get into the head of the artist with all of the interpretive power we can muster. We don’t usually do that – preferring to let the work speak on it’s own, and we haven’t talked to Jane Fine for a better insight. No we do it cold turkey, even with absurd distractions.

Yet in the end the work is the work, and it’s mighty Fine, distinctively complex with intuitive eruptions of emotive execution. The show was back in the fall 2009, and we use the critical calendar set by Art in America Magazine, where timeless is months behind.

Hi Dr. Lisa-

I’ve been married to a wonderful woman for 5 happy years. The issue is my art work is highly sexual and needs to be continuely fed new inspiration so I can continue to create. My wife knew what my painting was all about when she married me. I always assumed from her seeing my work, that she knew anonymous sex was part of my process. In other words, I have sex with other women, but I don’t discuss it with her.

I guess with this whole Tiger Woods thing now I’m getting a bit paranoid. This unspoken don’t ask don’t tell arrangement has me somewhat anxious lately, as my wife is talking about getting pregnant and I want to have a more secure arrangement before we have a child. When we got married, I thought that maybe someday we would have kids, but I didn’t know that 5 years of sleeping around would go so fast.

So, do I tell her or go with the status quo which has been working quite well? My painting is important to me and I don’t want to have to give it up. The married sex just doesn’t work for me.

Tight Lipped

Dear Tight-

Let’s be honest. Sleeping around is fun. And using your painting as a reason to do it and not tell your wife is a load of crap to you, me, her and likely everyone reading this letter, although I do think YOU believe that you think your painting is a legitimate reason for having anonymous sex.

Okay, so I think it’s bullshit, but supposing you don’t agree with me, then it still seems like a conversation you should have with your wife anyway if she is to understand and support you and your art.

And if she’s not okay with it, and if your art is important enough to you, then go with the consequences and negotiate up front next time with the next partner about your artistic process.

The good news is, that since you’re an artist, unlike Tiger Woods, it’s highly unlikely that any of the women you’ve slept with are going to crawl out of the woodwork looking for hush money.

LOVE U!!

Dr.Lisa
