Everybody loves Amy Lipton and that goes 2x for me. She leads up Ecoartspace East Coast.
Therein lay the rub. Ecoological art hasn’t quite made it over the hump. At least as a form of documentation that will rivet me to what I’m seeing. It’s a bit of a high school science fair with Birkenstocks. Lord knows I/we tried but it was just challenging. Our experiences with artist participants was mostly brittle but when we were left to our own devices then we had fun. It was like talking about a Prius, it’s odd, a bit ducky, gets great gas mileage, the owners feel righteous, and we really want a Porche.

Paul and Dr. Lisa visit Pierogi 2000 to see the Jane Fine show and try to get into the head of the artist with all of the interpretive power we can muster. We don’t usually do that – preferring to let the work speak on it’s own, and we haven’t talked to Jane Fine for a better insight. No we do it cold turkey, even with absurd distractions.

Yet in the end the work is the work, and it’s mighty Fine, distinctively complex with intuitive eruptions of emotive execution. The show was back in the fall 2009, and we use the critical calendar set by Art in America Magazine, where timeless is months behind.

Hi Dr. Lisa-

I’ve been married to a wonderful woman for 5 happy years. The issue is my art work is highly sexual and needs to be continuely fed new inspiration so I can continue to create. My wife knew what my painting was all about when she married me. I always assumed from her seeing my work, that she knew anonymous sex was part of my process. In other words, I have sex with other women, but I don’t discuss it with her.

I guess with this whole Tiger Woods thing now I’m getting a bit paranoid. This unspoken don’t ask don’t tell arrangement has me somewhat anxious lately, as my wife is talking about getting pregnant and I want to have a more secure arrangement before we have a child. When we got married, I thought that maybe someday we would have kids, but I didn’t know that 5 years of sleeping around would go so fast.

So, do I tell her or go with the status quo which has been working quite well? My painting is important to me and I don’t want to have to give it up. The married sex just doesn’t work for me.

Let’s be honest. Sleeping around is fun. And using your painting as a reason to do it and not tell your wife is a load of crap to you, me, her and likely everyone reading this letter, although I do think YOU believe that you think your painting is a legitimate reason for having anonymous sex.

Okay, so I think it’s bullshit, but supposing you don’t agree with me, then it still seems like a conversation you should have with your wife anyway if she is to understand and support you and your art.

And if she’s not okay with it, and if your art is important enough to you, then go with the consequences and negotiate up front next time with the next partner about your artistic process.

The good news is, that since you’re an artist, unlike Tiger Woods, it’s highly unlikely that any of the women you’ve slept with are going to crawl out of the woodwork looking for hush money.

Dear Dr. Lisa,

Last week I had a studio visit from a well-connected independent curator. I opened a bottle of wine to
relieve some of my anxiety about the studio visit and before I knew it we had finished the bottle and were making out on the couch. Things didn’t go any further that night, but now he’s talking about putting my work in a group show and wants to come back for a “follow up” visit. How do I know if he’s really interested in my work or just wants to get into my pants?

Who cares? From time immemorial, people have been using their sex appeal to get what they want.

You’d probably be more confident about your work, if he had wanted to make a “follow up visit” without you spit-swapping him first.

PRESCRIPTION: No more putting out or drinking on the follow up studio visit. Save that until after your piece sells in the show.
