Co-director Paul H-O introduces the clip for his Facebook friends (3 minutes) and makes it seem even longer. It was the unfounded understanding that Mr. DeVito is something of an art collector, and during the course of interviewing Mr. DeVito the directors Tom Donahue and Paul find that the art collecting reputation was more of a rumor, and that Mr. DeVito does not have much material interest in art or photography. This leaves the directors, especially Paul, in an awkward position, which the experienced raconteur Devito picks up on and uses that realization to reduce H-O to a stammering boob. We still plow on and get the funniest soundbites in the film, so it was worth every bead of sweat. Danny DeVito, good man.

Gallery Beat (now GalleryBeat) really began with the high-powered Whitney biennial of 1993 - if you google that year you will find that it is the most explosive Biennial on record.Race and gender was a big theme and artists with strong political orientation in their work used the Biennial as a platform to vent their provocative ideas. The interweb hadn’t been up to speed (it barely existed) so it was up to print and TV media to go starkers. Which they did. The ‘93 Whitney Bi became the poster child of all that what was wrong with contemporary art and how twisted it was. As far as GBTV was concerned, this was action TV and the best Biennial we’ve ever seen. Check out the Guerilla Girls poster for the ‘93 WhitBi. New GBTV was spawned by Guest of Cindy Sherman, the documentary. Then some old intellectuals said I was Satan and Satan said no, H-O isn’t Satan, he’s from Hawaii. (wrong) Then Cindy Sherman denied that she had anything to do with it even though she’s up to her pits in it. Then Jerry Saltz the Pulitzer Prize Preening art critic denies having seen it though he has, and is not a bit player in it either. What is it about this harmless little story about the friendly little hamlet we call the Art World that gets the girls all knackered? Lord, you’d think Tom and me had made Children of the Corn rather than the nice look at why we love art and love the artists that need the love, badly.
