Tim Nye and me travel with the legendary beat artist George Herms to visit his good friend Dean Stockwell, the great scene-stealer of film and TV. Dean is also a lifelong, prolific artist. (his work can be seen in the Taos clips) It’s a long drive to Taos, and we get to Dean’s place in Taos, and damn if it doesn’t take us but about three hours before one of us that says something that set’s Dean into a rage. Once that gets settled, we broke the ice and he could just torture us with abandon. He rocks!

Then I go to George’s hideaway in Topanga, and he shows us the magic. He is the real thing, and an international treasure, and I love him.

SWELL Show 2010

Artist Plans Space Mission to Montana

Artist Steven Brower has a dream, and that is to build a rocket to fly in Montana in search of human life. He calls it Moranic Mission to Montana – BPL 003 : A Space Mission on a Budget. Steven Brower makes no bones about not having any rocket science knowledge but insists that he can do it in spite of little to no resources. Brower says “While an open ended motive such as ‘to do’ might seem too vague to provide any direction to a mission, it is in fact quite helpful when used in a reverse direction. Rather than providing a way forward, ‘to do’ becomes a reason resorted to when necessary. As an example, when a project doesn’t work out because it explodes, or rusts away after years of neglect, BPL management can always retreat to the safe haven of ‘having done something’, thus completing the mission successfully. This projection and retreat cycle generates innovation and induces a perpetual state of disorientation, which opens the path to acquiring knowledge”.

So, everything American red-state dumbasses believe about artists is realized with Brower’s philosophy and obvious disdain for actual functionality. If we can find the “rich people” fascinating to the point of bloated media balloons full of gas, there certainly is no reason to find somewhat obscure artists like Brower with clear missions, any less deserving. In fact, considering that Brower’s utter lack of utility is more interesting than the vain attempts by the ‘The Wealthy” at usefulness when it’s a turbo-charged asshole ride into a horrible and bleak oblivion for the entire planet.
