Rather than focus on religious paintings alone, the National Gallery's "Sacred Made Real" exhibit boldly features 17th-Century Spanish sculpture. Visceral, three-dimensional works depicting Christ's tortured body and John the Baptiste's severed head are gory enough to give haunted houses a run for their money. The Guardian's Adrian Searle comments, "These details are the product of a macabre ingenuity, the consummate technical skills of the 17th-century special effects studio." In other words, be sure to tour this stomach-churning exhibit before you go trick-or-treating this weekend.
